Spectral Banding An example case study of a typical failure progression for an inner race fault on an intermediate shaft of an extruder gearbox is shown below. Early indications of damage are seen well in advance, in this case over a year before corrective action was required. The pattern in the spectrum leaves no doubt that the problem is with the inner race of a specific bearing ( in this case position 550) and examination of the removed part confirms the fault condition. After fault detection, spare parts are ordered and the machine is watched closely but left in service until the trend begins to increase aggressively, at which time corrective action is taken. Before and after waveforms show the dramatic increase in energy caused by the fault condition. Gear Imaging Gear Vibration Imaging provides the ultimate, patented method of detecting gear faults. Synchronous waveform averaging and other filtering methods isolate the vibration produced by each gear tooth as it passes through mesh, while eliminating noise and vibration generated by other mechanical components. Statistical pattern recognition methods are used to identify and quantify these excess vibrations and alarm when the developing faults are detected.
